"Those looking for French cuisine in an incredible on-the-beach atmosphere will find it here. One of the most romantic places in Honolulu, one wall of windows opens to the sunset, torches on the breakwater, a hula moon above the palm fronds, and the entire Waikiki skyline visible to the leeward side. All tables have an ocean view, and dining here is less stiff and more welcoming than in bygone years. Jackets are no longer required for men, and the live music (slack-key and classical guitar with a vocalist Thurs-Sat, and strolling musicians on Sun) attracts sunset and music lovers too. Chef Hardy Kintscher has added his touch to the classics (onion soup, steak tartare, chateaubriand, bouillabaisse) and prepares fresh seafood, vegetarian creations, and rack of lamb with restraint and creativity."

Frommer's, by Jeanette Foster,

"A visit to Michel's is a reminder of the glory of fine dining. Its tranquil oceanside setting, perched right over the beach, begs guests to relax. Patrons, as they gaze out at the horizon through large windows spanning the dining room, feel stress wash away with the waves. From the moment you are seated, you are treated to the sort of attention almost forgotten except in old movies where butlers graciously serve their employers. Traditional lobster bisque ... they have been serving this trademark soup for more than 40 years. Jesse quickly heated the rich, creamy liquid over a burner until it reached just the right temperature. Then he proceeded to flambé tender chunks of fresh Maine lobster in cognac, adding them as a substantial garnish to the soup. It is impossible not to enjoy these classic tableside preparations. My companion's choice of steak Diane, another flambéed dish, upstaged my Sugpiaq wild Alaskan salmon. My companion relished each bite of the beef coated in a velvety smooth sauce, with portobello mushrooms. A cordial atmosphere and exceptional service — combined with executive chef Eberhard Kintscher's opulent continental menu — will have you dallying over your meal. And don't forget that breathtakingly romantic view."
