The quiet charm of The Cottage, on Lincoln
between Ocean and Seventh in Carmel, CA, is as inviting as the restaurant's menu. Featuring light, healthy lunches and breakfast
all day, customers can enjoy the delicious cuisine while relaxing to the sound of a soft
waterfall in the background. For over 10 years, The Cottage has delighted
locals and tourists alike, and although the restaurant changed hands in 1996, it's
character and quality remain intact.
"When we walked into the restaurant, we did not change anything," said co-owner
Stephen Cardinalli. "We have the same menu as before; the same cooks and the same
waitpersons." Cardinalli purchased the eatery in conjunction with his mother,
Kathleen, and his wife, Nellie. "They're the best partners you can have," he
said. "It works out great." The Cardinallis are not new to the restaurant
business in Carmel. |

"I had The Left Bank Cafe for 11
years," explains Kathleen. " It was over in the Carmel Plaza
and we were known for our specialty crepes - a few of them are
on our menu now. And we still see some of the same faces - we
had two couples in the other day who asked me if I remembered
them from our other place 15 years ago, when they were just
kids!"
But the only thing the Left Bank Cafe and The Cottage have in common, says Cardinalli, are
the crepes.
In addition to the crepes, The Cottage features an extensive and affordable breakfast
menu. The lunch menu features award winning artichoke soup, sandwiches and several salads. "We have customers that come in every Monday, because they know the
special is our Chicken Stew," Steve explains. "and we have people that come in
just for our artichoke soup, that they can have with a Caesar salad or half
sandwich." Nothing on the menu is deep-fried, says Cardinalli; everything is
either baked or broiled. |

"While the selection of
both savory and sweet crepes have established their own enduring claim to fame (the huge,
cottage-shaped fruit and ice cream dessert crepes are a formidable example), the menu goes
far and wide in all sorts of other offerings. From breakfast muffins and pancake
batter to pizza dough (with six innovative pizzas to choose from), as well as all the
salad dressings and sauces, "We do it all right here," they emphasize.
Along with the regular dinner menu that hits all the bases - filet mignon, chicken
marsala, swordfish with papaya salsa - the list of nightly specials makes for some tough
decision-making." |
